Joao Double Ends Rams Run
Attendance: 24, 180
A double from Lucas Joao ended Derby County`s undefeated run at twelve games as Sheffield Wednesday ran out 2-0 winners at Hillsbrough. A much changed Derby side fell behind on eighteen minutes after Joao was teed up by Jack Hunt and the big striker doubled his and Wednesday`s tally two minutes after the break when he fired home from outside the area. Despite a number of late chances The Rams couldn`t find the net as they failed to regain second place in the table.
Gary Rowett made six changes to the side held at the weekend but, after an early David Nugent shot was blocked, the home side got on the front foot and Frederico Venancio had a header straight at Scott Carson from a corner before they took the lead on eighteen minutes. A long ball forward caught out the left side of The Rams defence and Jack Hunt laid the ball back for Lucas Joao to score with a low finish Andreas Weimann headed just wide at the near post as Derby looked to get back in the match but they trailed at the break.
Things got worse just two minutes after halftime when Joao turned and ran at goal and thumped a low effort into the bottom corner from outside the area. Nugent headed over from a corner and Matej Vydra played Weimann in on goal but Joe Wildsmith beat away his effort with the Wednesday keeper then saving with his feet from Vydra
Tom Huddlestone`s dipping volley was off target from a corner and Vydra couldn`t find the target before Weimann`s chip brought another save from Wildsmith as The Rams failed to find the net and fell to defeat.
