Rams Beat Blues
Attendance: 22, 121
Derby County`s fine away form continued at St Andrews as they left with a 3-0 victory over Birmingham City. Jonathan Grounds hit the post in the early stages for the home side but Johnny Russell cut in from the right on ninety minutes and his deflected effort found the net. Matej Vydra smashed in number two in a dominant second half performance and Andreas Weimann tapped home a third in the last night to help The Rams reclaim second place in the table.
Birmingham played with a high-tempo from the first whistle and were close to taking the lead with just five minutes on the clock when Jonathan Grounds` effort struck the post but despite the pressure The Rams settled into the game and looked dangerous on the break. Indeed they took the lead with nineteen minutes on the clock when Johnny Russell cut in the right and his deflected effort from inside the area beat David Stockdale at his near post. Derby defended well and kept their hosts at arms length as the half ticked by with Craig Gardner`s effort that kept out by Scott Carson the main moment of danger. At the other end Matej Vydra`s effort from a tight angle clipped the bar and he lifted the ball back across goal but there was only one goal in it at the break,
Derby started brightly after halftime and they doubled their lead on fifty-six minutes when Tom Lawrence lifted a pass over the home defence and Vydra ran onto it before rifling a shot into the roof of the net. The goal put The Rams firmly in the driving seat and Stockdale kept out another effort from Russell and, after another effort from Grounds hit the woodwork, they tied up another convincing away win in the final minute. A quick break forward ended when David Nugent, on from the bench, squared for fellow substitute Andreas Weimann to score into an empty net to round out the scoring.
