Late Goals See United Through
Attendance: 73, 899
Two late goals saw Manchester United beat Derby County 2-0 at Old Trafford in their FA Cup Third Round tie. The Rams were pushed back in the opening stages as United showed their quality on the ball on the early stages with Scott Carson saving from Paul Pogba and Juan Mata but The Rams worked hard to contain their opponents and Marcus Olsson`s header was touched over the top as they had a chance of the own midway through the half. Marcus Rashford was twice denied by the woodwork as the minutes ticked by and it wasn`t until the eighty-fourth minute, when Jesse Lingard fired into the top corner from the edge of the area, that Derby fell behind. A quick break from a late Rams corner saw Romelu Lukaka exchange passes with Anthony Martial and find the net to put the tie beyond any doubt and ease the into the next round.
Alex Pearce and Marcus Olsson replaced Curtis Davies and Craig Forsyth as part of six changes made by Gary Rowett with Tom Lawrence replacing Matej Vydra just behind Sam Winnall as the main striker. United dominated possession as the game got underway and Scott Carson had to save from Paul Pogba as the game progressed. Another shot brushed the side netting but despite the pressure The Rams backline was standing up admirably to the test.
Carson superbly tipped over a Juan Mata freekick before The Rams had a chance of their own when Olsson got forward well and his looping header from a Johnny Russell cross was helped over by Sergio Romero. Marcus Rashford`s header came back off the inside of the post in the closing moments of the half but the game was goalless at the break.
Romelu Lukakau was introduced at the break and Tom Huddlestone`s deflected effort left Romero rooted to the spot but the ball was wide of the mark before Jose Mourinho then brought on Anthony Martial as his side looked for a winner. Rashford`s well stuck effort from the left of Derby`s area cannoned back off the inside of the post as he was again denied by the woodwork and, after another of his shot`s was saved by Carson, Pogba inexplicably shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
United`s quality eventually told with six minutes to go when the ball sat up nicely for former Derby loanee Jesse Lingard and his half volley flashed into the top corner of the net from the edge of the area with Carson beaten. The result was put beyond any remaining doubt in the final minute of normal time when Lukaku beat Richard Keogh on the halfway line and he exchanged passes with Martial in a lightning break before firing under Carson to put his side into the next round.
