Winnall At The Double
Attendance: 17, 267
Sam Winnall`s double saw Derby County beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Portman Road to move into the automatic promotion places. Winnall`s header on thirteen minutes gave The Rams the lead and Matej Vydra twice went close as they had the better of the first half. Winnall added a second only three minutes after the break when the cut infield and lashed a shot into the top corner of the net and whilst Joe Garner pulled one back the comfortably saw out the remainder of the match to secure victory.
Gary Rowett made five changes to the side that drew on Boxing Day and The Rams started quickly and went in front on thirteen minutes. Tom Lawrence`s corner picked out Sam Winnall and his header beat Bartosz Bialkowski and found the back of the net. Matej Vydra could have made it two minutes later but he shot over when through on goal and had another saved aa Derby continued on the front foot.
George Thorne, Johnny Russell and Lawrence all had changes but Ipswich were nearly back on level terms on the half hour mark when Lawrence had to clear off the line after Scott Carson lost the ball at a corner. Winnall nearly added a second just before the break but Bialkowski tipped his effort past the post.
Three minutes after halftime Winnall did double his, and Derby`s, tally when he picked the ball up in the left channel before cutting inside and smashing a shot into the top corner of the net from outside the area.
Ipswich pulled a goal back just after the hour mark when Joe Garner headed home from Martyn Waghorn`s corner but despite having a spell of their own as the game reached it`s conclusion they failed to threaten Carson again as The Rams went home with the points.
