Russell Strike Gives Rams Win
Attendance: 26, 761
Johnny Russell`s late strike gave Derby County a deserved 1-0 victory against a defensive Burton Albion side at Pride Park this afternoon. The Brewers were happy to sit deep and frustrate their hosts and Stephen Bywater saved from Chris Martin, Andreas Weimann and a deflected cross from Tom Lawrence as the minutes ticked by. The pressure eventually told though as Martin`s shot was saved and the Burton defence hesitated Russell pounced to calm home the winner with nine minutes to go.
Marcus Olsson, George Thorne and Chris Martin came into the side for Craig Forsyth, Tom Huddlestone and David Nugent as Gary Rowett looked to shake things up after the midweek home defeat. Olsson had the first shot on target after buildup play that involved Marton and Joe Ledley and Martin also tried his luck from range but Bywater was equal to both efforts. Tom Lawrence whipped a dangerous ball across goal but nobody could get a touch to it before another cross was diverted towards his own goal by Ben Turner but Bywater clawed the ball away.
Andreas Weimann looked lively as the second half got underway and he had a shot save before another dangerous looking low cross of his was gathered by Bywater. Lawrence`s effort was deflected wide of goal and in a rare moment of attacking threat from Burton Turner`s header was cleared off the line by Weimann with Scott Carson beaten.
Rowett introduced Johnny Russell, Sam Winnall and Bradley Johnson from the bench as his side went in search of a winner and with nine minutes to go they made the breakthrough. Martin`s initial effort was saved by Bywater and with the visitor`s defence unable to clear Russell fired home the winner from inside the area. Weimann had a late chance to put the result beyond any doubt but one goal was always going to be enough.
