Vydra Helps Rams To Forest Win
Attendance: 31, 196
Derby County were clinical with their chances to retain the Brian Clough trophy with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at Pride Park. Matej Vydra opened the scoring inside the first minute and The Rams looked solid at the back as Forest saw more of the ball but failed to trouble the scoresheet. Scott Carson was called into action when Barrie McKay was played through on goal but he was equal to the test and after a Jason Cummings miss at the start of the second period David Nugget calmly slotted home a second. Tom Lawrence threatened with a couple of dead ball opportunities in the closing stage as The Rams took all three points after a disciplined display.
David Nugget and Matej Vydra came into the starting lineup to spearhead the attack and it took only 24 seconds for the Czech striker to find the net, he cut in from the right after the ball reached him from a throw-in and his left footed effort from the edge of the area found the bottom of the net beyond Jordan Smith.
Forest were enjoying the majority of possession but were lacking a cutting edge going forward with Scott Carson largely untroubled despite the visitors having the ball in some dangerous looking
positions. Daryl Murphy had an effort easily held by Derby`s keeper and at the other end only a fine block by a defender denied what looked to be a second for Vydra following Richard Keogh`s cutback. The Reds had one last chance before the break when The Rams` defence was caught too high up the park and Barrie McKay was through on goal but Carson got a foot to his shot to keep his side in front.
Jason Cummings got a foot to a low cross but turned the ball over the top from close range as the second period got underway and Forest were punished for that miss when Vydra collected a loose ball and ran at their defence before playing in Nugent who slipped a neat finish beyond Smith.
George Thorne came off the bench with twenty minutes to go to replace Vydra to give The Rams a more solid look and Tom Lawrence twice went close from freekicks before having another kept out by Smith in the closing stages as Derby saw out the game without further scores at the back to take the points.
