Watkins Denies Rams
Attendance: 8, 679
A late Ollie Watkins goal snatched three points away from Derby County as they were held to a 1-1 draw with Brentford at Griffin Park. After Joe Ledley had headed his new side in front sixteen minutes into his first appearance the home side dominated possession but had little to show for it in terms of shots on target in the first half. Chris Mepham and Nico Yennaris went close after the break but it wasn`t until the eighty-sixth minute that Brentford had their second effort on target and this time it found the net as Watkins poked home from close range to give his side a point.
Joe Ledley and Sam Winnall came in to make their full Derby debuts whilst Mason Bennett made his first start in the league and Bradley Johnson moved further forward to play just behind the new striker. The Rams began in positive manner and Tom Lawrence tested Daniel Bentley when he cut in from the left but the Brentford keeper pushed his swerving effort away after six minutes. They did hit the front ten minutes later though when Winnall headed a cross back across the six yard area and Ledley guided a header into the far corner of the net.
Brentford stepped things up after the goal and took control of possession but whilst they bossed the game Scott Carson was largely untroubled in the Derby goal. Neal Maupay and Chris Mepham both had headers off target whilst Nico Yennaris also shot wide as the game approached the final stages.
One last chance came the home side's way though and with only four minutes to go Ollie Watkins poked home from a low cross to save a point for his side.
