Hammill Winner Sends Barnsley Through
Attendance: 7, 163
Barnsley twice came from behind to progress to the Third Round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of Derby County after a 3-2 victory at Oakwell. Johnny Russell opened the scoring inside six minutes before Adam Jackson headed his side level. Mason Bennett put The Rams back in front before the break before being denied twice after halftime as his side looked to be on course to setup a tie with Tottenham in the next round. However, Tom Bradshaw struck from close range and then substitute Adam Hammill curled home a winner as the final whistle approached to put the Yorkshire side through.
Gary Rowett made eleven changes from the impressive victory last Friday with notable inclusions George Thorne making his return from injury whilst academy youngster Max Bird started alongside him in midfield and Callum Guy was named on the bench. The home side were the first to threaten when Harvey Barnes` effort stuck the crossbar after only three minutes but on six minutes The Rams opened the scoring at the other end when a quick break ended with the ball at Johnny Russell`s feet and he curled home a neat finish from inside the area.
Barnsley were on the front foot and they got themselves back on level terms after eighteen minutes when Adam Jackson glanced a header into the net from a corner on the left. Russell had a great change when Ikechi Anya`s cutback found him inside the area but his shot was straight at the keeper but another run and cross from the Scottish international set up Mason Bennett who struck at the far post to put his side back in front six minutes before the break.
Bennett looked to increase the lead after halftime but Adam Davies got enough on the shots in the Barnsley goal to keep them out at the expense of a corner on each occasion. The game went thorough a lull as neither side could establish themselves on proceedings before the home side turned the game on it`s head in the last twenty minutes.
Firstly Tom Bradshaw benefitted after Barnsley won the ball back when a low cross through the area saw him turn into the empty from close range before Adam Hammill cut infield from a corner with two minutes to go before curling a shot into the far corner of the net to settle the tie.
