Vydra Puts Rams Through
Attendance: 3, 033
A penalty from Matej Vydra saw Derby County edge out Grimsby Town 1-0 at Blundell Park to progress into the next round of the competition. After an even first half The Rams were awarded a spot kick on fifty-three minutes after Vydra was pulled back in the area and he converted himself to give his side the lead. Chris Martin and Tom Lawrence both missed changes before Ben Davies picked up a second booking and with it went the home side`s chances.
Tom Lawrence came into the side to make his full debut and was amongst ten changes made to the side who beat Bolton on Saturday. With so many changes Derby didn`t get going in the first and in a tight encounter Tom Bolarinwa had the only real moment of danger just a minute before the break but Jonatahn Mitchell easily kept his effort out.
The Rams stepped up a gear as the second period began and just eight minutes in Matej Vydra was pulled back inside the area with the referee pointing to the spot. The former Watford man stepped up to put the penalty to the keepers right to open the scoring. Chris Martin and Lawrence both went close as Derby continued on the front foot but Mitchell was called into action at the other end to palm over Sikiri Dembele`s effort.
Former Ram Ben Davies was shown a second yellow card on sixty-three minutes and Rowett`s side saw out the remainder of the contest with ease. Substitute Ikechi Anya wasted a good opportunity as the game wound down and there was a full debut for Under-23 winger Kellan Gordon before the final whistle.
