Vydra Goal Enough For Rams
Attendance: 24, 371
Matej Vydra`s penalty was enough to give Derby County a 1-0 victory over Preston North End at Pride Park as they bounced back from the home defeat on Saturday. Andreas Weimann and David Nugent came close to breaking the deadlock before Curtis Davies was pulled back in the area in the second period and Chris Maxwell couldn`t keep out Vydra`s effort. The Rams sat back in the closing stages but did enough to see out the game.
Gary Rowett made thee changes to the side from the weekend as there was a change of shape as well as The Rams went 4-2-3-1 with Marcus Olsson coming in at leftback, Matej Vydra replacing Jacob Butterfield and playing just behind the striker who was David Nugent with Chris Martin dropping down to the bench. They were nearly off to a quick start when Preston keeper Chris Maxwell mishit a clearance when he was out of his goal on two minutes but Andreas Weimann couldn`t get enough bend on his effort to find the empty net.
Derby continued on the front foot and Nugent was then denied by Maxwell`s foot after a clever pass from Weimann sent him in on goal. Preston had their own spell of possession and Daniel Johnson had a freekick tipped over by Scott Carson. The Rams looked the more dangerous of the two sides as halftime approached but there were no further clearcut chances before the break.
Nugent`s effort was blocked with the goal at his mercy after Weimann`s cutback as the second half got underway and Vydra met a cross from the right but he couldn`t get enough on the header to trouble Maxwell. Just before the hour mark, after warning a Preston player for holding in the area, Curtis Davies was pulled back and the referee pointed to spot. Vydra stepped up and snuck his penalty into the corner with Maxwell not quite getting enough on the effort to keep the ball out.
Derby sat back in defence as the game wore on but despite seeing more of the ball Preston failed to trouble Carson and The Rams saw out five minutes of added time to claim their first win of the season.
