Rams Disappoint In Wolves Defeat
Attendance: 27, 757
Goals from Barry Douglas and Ivan Cavaleiro gave Wolverhampton Wanderers a 2-0 victory over Derby County at Pride Park after a poor performance from The Rams. After an even opening period Barry Douglas` low effort deflected into the net off Richard Keogh to give the visitors the lead. After a brief bright spell following the break by Derby Wolves dominated the game and could have scored more before Cavaleiro tapped in from close range to give them the points.
Gary Rowett one with an unchanged side for The Rams` first home game of the season and whilst they saw a little more of the ball in the opening stages they rarely threatened Wolves going forward as they held their shape and looked to strike on the break. Their threat mainly came from out wide with Derby`s fullbacks often exposed and it was from one such attack they took the lead on thirty-two minutes. Matt Doherty crossed from the left and the ball eventually found Barry Douglas who had a first time effort across goal that went in off Richard Keogh`s leg.
Derby upped the tempo after they break as they looked to get back into the match with Curtis Davies heading over from a free kick and Johnny Russell then forced a low save from John Ruddy after being found by Andreas Weimann and cutting inside. The visitors slowly took control though and Andre Wisdom was forced to sprint from the halfway line to get back and deny them with a fine challenge after he was guilty of giving the ball away.
Diego Jota had a shot tipped onto the post after an exchange of passes put him through on goal and Leo Bonatini fired over from the rebound with the goal at his mercy and Doherty then hit the side netting after being played in by Bright Enobakhare. With Derby pushing forward for the equaliser Bradley Johnson hot a shot tipped over by Ruddy but they were caught on the counter with fourteen minutes to go when Tim Huddlestone wasn`t strong enough in the challenge and Enobakhare played Jota through and he squared for Ivan Cavaleiro to finish into an empty net. David Nugget had a late header tipped over but it was a comfortable win for Wolves by the final whistle.
