Ince Penalty Earns Point
New York Stadium
Attendance: 10, 763
Tom Ince`s late penalty gave Derby County a point as they drew 1-1 with already relegated Rotherham United at the New York Stadium. There were few chances in the opening period despite both sides keeping the ball well at times and the home side took the lead on sixty-six minutes when Lee Frecklington`s effort from a deep cross found the bottom corner of the net. The Rams stepped up the pressure to get themselves back into the match and Ince was tripped inside the area with six minutes to go before picking himself up to convert from the spot and level the scores.
Gary Rowett named an unchanged side after the victory over Wolves and The Rams won a flurry of early corners but couldn`t take advantage. Both sides then had spells of possession without troubling the opposition goalkeeper with Richard Smallwood having a shot blocked at one end and Tom Ince having a similar outcome as the half went by. Jonson Clarke-Harris had the only shot of note after a swift break after Derby gave the ball away but his effort was straight at Scott Carson as the game was goalless at the interval.
Clarke-Harris was the first to threaten in the second period when his pace took him away from a defender but his shot didn`t have enough on it to trouble Carson. Bradley Johnson fired well wide with an off balance effort after being teed up by Darren Bent and the home side took the lead just before the halfway point when Joe Mattock`s ball to the back post was met by Lee Frecklington and his volley found the bottom corner of the net.
Richard Keogh`s headed backpass was short of pace but Carson was out to deny Tom Adeyemi and The Rams stepped up a gear as they looked to get back into the match. With chances still not flowing it took a trip on Ince after a neat exchange of passes from a corner to give Derby the chance to level the scores and Ince calmly converted the resulting spot kick to equalise.
Derby finished strongly and Nick Blackman, on as a substitute, found space in the area but his shot was pushed away by Richard O`Donnell and the Rotherham keeper then denied Ince a winner in added time after Johnson touched a freekick to him as he beat away his powerfully struck effort.
