Ince Late Winner For Rams
Attendance: 19, 381
Tom Ince`s late effort gave Derby County a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City as Gary Rowett made his first return to St Andrews. Jacob Butterfield`s shot went in off the post and the Thomas Kusczak`s back after three minutes to give The Rams the lead but Birmingham had the better of the rest of the half and Lukas Jutkiewicz`s effort was disallowed for handball. Che Adams converted from another corner after the ball fell to him at close range but as the game reached added time Scott Carson`s quickly taken goalkick caught the home defence out and Ince beat Kusczak to the ball and lifted an effort over him and into the net.
Jacob Butterfield was the only change to the starting lineup and he went about justifying his inclusion as The Rams took the lead after only there minutes. Tom Ince cut in from the right and pulled the ball back to Butterfield whose shot beat Tomasz Kusczak but rebounded back off the post and then into the net off the goalkeepers back. Birmingham upped their intensity after the goal and knocked a number of balls into Derby`s area but Richard Keogh and Alex Pearce stood from at the heart of their defence the repel all attacks.
Che Adams and Craig Gardner both dragged efforts wide of goal for the home side whilst Lukas Jutkiewicz had a shot beaten behind by Scott Carson before having an effort from a corner disallowed for handball. David Nugget had the only other real chance for Derby but his volley from Johnny Russell`s chipped ball was pushed away by Kusczak as there were no more goals before the break.
Russell had an early effort as the second period got underway but Birmingham were back on the front foot again and Gardner was only just wide with an effort after a blocked shot fell to him and ust as they looked to have weathered the storm Gary Rowett`s side found themselves pegged back on sixty-eight minutes. A corner from the left was met by Ryan Shotton and the ball fell to Adams who smashed it into the net from close range. The game evened out after the goal but neither side could take control and fashion a clear cut chance.
That was until added time when with Birmingham having failed with another attack Carson quickly took a goalkick and with the home defence caught out of position Ince was through on goal and he lofted an effort over Kusczak and into net to snatch the points.
