Nugent Hattrick Helps Rams To Win
Attendance: 27, 221
David Nugent`s hat-trick helped Derby County to a 4-2 victory over Fulham in an incident packed match at Pride Park. Nugent scored is first inside the first ten minutes lifting a finish over David Button after a wonderful pass fro Marcus Olsson before Floyd Ayite levelled the scores from the edge of the area as halftime approached. There was still time for Nugent to be denied from the spot though and just as the chance looked to have gone his volley on the turn restored their lead after a looping header from a corner dropped over his shoulder. Nugent then charged down a clearance to run in a third before Johnny Russell`s low finish wrapped the points up. Ayite pulled one back with just over ten minutes to play but despite a strong finish they didn`t trouble the scoresheet again and Derby took the points.
Fulham started the game brightly and enjoyed the lion`s share of possession but Derby looked sharp on the break and they took the lead on eight minutes when Marcus Olsson clipped a superb pass over a defender and into David Nugent`s path and the striker lifted a neat finish over David Button and into the net. The game swung from end-to-end following the goal and Tom Cairney forced a save from Scott Carson before Johnny Russell fired over the top and Scott Malone was then denied at the other end.
Fulham were back on level terms with ten minutes to go to the break when Ryan Fredericks` cross was blocked and the ball fell to Floyd Ayite who swept a finish beyond Carson from the edge of the area. The visitors` tails were up but Derby had the chance to go back in front not long afterwards when Matej Vydra was brought down in the area but Button superbly saved Nugent`s spotkick. The former Middlesbrough striker was not to be denied though as far post header from a corner dropped over his shoulder and he span and found the net with a well timed volley.
As the half ticked down the match nearly took another twist but Sone Aluko`s firmly struck effort cannoned against the woodwork and bounced to safety leaving The Rams 2-1 ahead at the break.
Jacob Butterfield replaced Vydra as the second half got underway and Tom Ince was denied by Button before Derby extended their lead when Nugent chased down a backpass and blocked the clearance before running the ball into the empty despite the attention of two defenders to complete his hat-trick.
Derby kept their momentum and scored their fourth at the midway point of the half after Button`s poor throw out ended with the ball at Russell`s feet and his low finish back across the keeper from inside the area extended the lead. Russell went close again with a lobbed effort before Ince was denied by the Fulham keeper with a well struck freekick.
Fulham got back on top as the last ten minutes approached and they got one back when Aluko`s pace worried Alex Pearce and as he backed off the ball was squared to Ayite who found the net with a low finish. The visitors dominated possession for the remainder of the match but without troubling Carson and Derby claimed their second win in four days.
