Vydra Seals Points
Attendance: 27, 690
Matej Vydra`s goal was enough to give Derby County a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Pride Park in front of the SkySports cameras. The Rams had the better of the first half with Johnny Russell twice coming close and David Nugent having a shot beaten away by Alex Smithies. Derby increased the pressure after the break but the QPR defence stood firm until the seventieth minute when Smithies couldn`t gather a low shot from Tom Ince and Vydra fired into the roof of the net. Idrissa Sylla hit the post with a free header from a corner but Gary Rowett`s side saw out the game to claim the win.
Rowett went with an unchanged size for his first home game in charge but his side were held at arms length by a QPR side buoyed by a recent upturn in results. Johnny Russell screwed a cross shot across the face of goal and out of the reach of two Derby players closing in. Chris Baird`s cross was misjudged by Alex Smithies but Russell couldn`t react quickly enough to direct his effort on target and Grant Hall`s effort was easily held by Scott Carson in a rare break from the visitors.
Matej Vydra`s deflected freekick fell to Russell but he couldn't get enough on his effort as the ball sat up and Vydra himself then flicked an effort wide after a misshit shot fell into his path. Russell headed wide from another Baird cross and David Nugget had a shot beaten away as The Rams turned the heat up as halftime approached.
Derby continued on the front foot after the break but weren`t creating any chances despite a number of balls into the area but they eventually took the lead with twenty minutes to go. Tom Ince`s effort was spilled by Smithies and Vydra was quickest to react firing the rebound into the roof of the net. The Rams looked to see out the game from that point and were largely untroubled although Scott Carson had to push an effort from Matt Smith away and Idrissa Sylla was left completely unmarked from a corner but his header hit the post and Derby took the points.
