Nugent Gets Rams Back To Winning Ways
Attendance: 30, 280
David Nugent`s first goal for Derby County was enough to get them back to winning ways as they came from behind to beat Barnsley 2-1 at Pride Park. The visitors had the better of the early chances with Scott Carson saving from Adam Hammill and Adam Armstrong before The Rams finished the half strongly. A long throw at the start of the second period altered the flow of the game when Matty James headed home but Tom Ince flashed a right footed effort into the roof of the net two minutes later to get his side back into the game immediately. Adam Davies` had to be on form to keep Derby at bay as they increased the pressure and Nugent`s deflected effort from just inside the area was enough to take the points despite some late Barnsley pressure.
Steve McClaren went with a 4-2-3-1 formation with Matej Vydra back in the side for his first start since New Year`s Day and there was a return at left back for Marcus Olsson. The Rams looked apprehensive in the early stages as Barnsley created the only chances of note with Adam Hammill having a shot deflected behind after a long throw was not dealt with and the same player had another effort from range claimed by Scott Carson.
Adam Armstrong was next to threaten firing just wide of the far post from an acute angle before forcing Carson into another save. Derby fought back as the half wore on and Johnny Russell was denied by Adam Davies in the visitor`s goal after advancing into the area and Julien de Sart drove a low effort at the keeper after Vydra`s effort was blocked. Tom Ince had the last chance of the half as he jinked into the area but his curling effort was too high and the sides were goalless at the break.
Derby continued on the front foot as the second half got underway but despite being on top they fell behind seven minutes in when a long throw was headed home by Matty James somewhat against the run of play. The lead didn`t last long though as Ince scored his thirteenth goal of the season reacting quickly as the ball fell to him in the area and he crashed home a right footed effort to level the scores.
Russell and Ince were too high with effort as was Vydra whose looping header fell onto the roof of the net. The chances were all belonging to The Rams and Ince was denied by a combination of keeper and the post before Davies saved from Russell but he could do nothing as they took the lead on seventy-six minutes. David Nugent found room in the area and his his low effort took a deflection off a defender before finding the bottom corner of the net.
Cyrus Christie`s header was cleared off the line from a corner but despite some late pressure from Barnsley the Derby defence stood firm despite some nervous moments as they held on for the win.
