Referee:

After 32 years of heartbreak - including losing a 3-0 first half lead in the 90's - Giles Barnes' goal gave the Rams a 1-0 victory and plunged Leeds into further relegation trouble when he headed in the only goal of the game to give Derby victory at Elland Road.

The Rams dominated the first half and were ahead in the 8th minute, Barnes was first to meet Jon Stead's cross and powered in an unstoppable header passed Leeds goalkeeper Graham Stack and into the corner of the net. It could have been 2-0 mid-way through the half, Steve Howard rose high to head a Paul Boertien cross wide from 12-yards Leeds came to life in the second half and Hayden Foxe tested Stephen Bywater from 20-yards with a dipping drive and Robbie Blake also went close.

The Rams back-line was working overtime and Dean Leacock and Darren Moore were outstanding to quell the Leeds pressure. The Rams went close late on to doubling their lead, Morten Bisgaard cross from the by-line found David
Jones who rattled the crossbar with a fierce shot.

But at the whistle coach Davies celebrated the victory with a punch in the air and the 3,000 Rams fans celebrated a historic victory.

Vital Derby Man of the Match - Dean Leacock

Manager Rating

Derby manager Billy Davies: 'Giles Barnes has got good potential but he can get better like a lot of our players.
His final ball should be better. His left side should be better. He's got great potential but he's a young player and he can't rest on his laurels. None of us can. We're not good enough to do that.

'I thought our opening 45 minutes was exceptional. The game should have been dead and buried, but we've got to be very proud in the end. It's our first result here for 32 years.'

Opponent Rating

Leeds boss Dennis Wise: 'We fell asleep for the goal and we should have attacked it. Small details are costing us at the moment. We've got the squad to get out of this and I'm sure in January we'll add a couple more. There are certain people we've earmarked. We have to get a certain amount of points by a certain time but time's far from up. It (Leeds's position) will change.'
