Rams And Owls In Stalemate

Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday played out a goalless draw at Hillsborough as neither side were able to find the breakthrough to take the points. Atdhe Nihiu fired straight at Lee Grant and Chris Maguire`s deflected freekick crashed back off the bar in the firsthalf whilst substitute Johnny Russell twice went clear after the break rolling one effort just wide with Kieran Westwood saving his second opportunity. The Rams didn`t display their usual free flowing football but Steve McClar-en will take heart from the fact his side have yet to concede a goal.

Jake Buxton came back into the side after missing out on Monday night with Zak Whitbread drop-ping down to the bench. The first chance of the match fell to Jeff Hendrik who fired over from twenty-five yards and Simon Dawkins had a chance when a poor clearance fell to him inside the area but his shot was straight at Kieran Westwood in the home goal. Lee Grant was on his toes to get his hand to a deflected Kieran Lee shot and Hendrick threatened again at the other end when a headed clearance dropped to him but his volley was the wrong side of the post.

Atdhe Nihiu had a great opportunity to open the scoring but fired straight at Grant from close range and Chris Martin looked to be in on goal but he was forced wide and his shot could only find the side netting from a tight angle. Former Ram Chris Maguire`s freekick took a deflection and hit the bar with Grant stranded and Ward fired another effort straight at Westwood after a jinking run. Wednesday finished the firsthalf strongly and Stevie May took advantage of a mix-up in the Derby midfield but rolled his effort just wide before Tom Lees had a header cleared off the line as the halftime whistle approached.

The Rams broke quickly early in the second half but Craig Forsyth`s effort as blocked on the edge of the area and Maguire threatened again but Grant got down well to keep out his freekick. Johnny Russell replaced Dawkins and had a great opportunity almost straight away when Craig Bryson`s pass released him but rolled his shot wide of the post and Sam Hutchison hit a half-volley over at the other end. Russell was again released on goal by a neat pass but Westwood came out to meet him and made a save low to his right with Martin slicing an effort well wide from the rebound as both side had to settle for a point.
