Derby County`s dominance of Leeds United continued as they claimed a 3-1 victory at Pride Park for a tenth victory in a row over the Yorkshire side. Steve MacClaren`s side started with a high tempo and two goals within the space of three minutes from Chris Martin and Johnny Russell put The Rams ahead but a mistake from Lee Grant on the stroke of halftime time gifted Jason Pearce a goal and put the visitors right back in the match. There were half chances at both ends in the second period but just as Leeds looked to up the pressure in the closing stages to find the equaliser Will Hughes danced through their defence to curl home a right-footed finish and secure the points and a first home win of the season for Derby.
Steve MacClaren made three changes to side in his first game in charge with Richard Keogh returning after suspension and Johnny Russell and John Eustace both returning to the starting line-up after being on the bench on Tuesday. The Rams started at a high tempo and Will Hughes` chip landed on the roof of the net after Paddy Kenny left his area to try and clear the ball. Richard Keogh headed over from a Jamie Ward corner but it was not all one way traffic and Rudolph Austin hit one wide from twentyfive yards before Noel Hunt glanced a header wide from a corner as Leeds got back into the match.
Derby got back on the front foot with Craig Forsyth getting forward down the left, firstly his ball into the area was cleared before it reached Jamie Ward and he then had a cross-shot held by Kenny after another run. The pressure told in the twentieth minute when Chris Martin fed Craig Bryson inside the area and as the Leeds defence was drawn towards him he slipped the ball square back to Martin who was left with the goal at his mercy and he finished high into the net beyond Kenny. The Rams double their lead two minutes later when Will Hughes found Martin on the edge of the area and his neat backheel found Russell who curled home a neat finish into the far corner.
Alex Mowatt had a shot easily held by Lee Grant and the former Burnley keeper had to be out quickly to beat Ross McCormack to the ball after a neat pass looked to have put him through on goal. Grant was involved as Leeds pulled one back just before the break when Lee Peltier`s deep cross to the back post was misjudged by the keeper and Tom Lees headed back into the six-yard box where Jason Pearce headed into an unguarded net.
Derby put the disappointment behind them and started brightly in the second half with Hughes taking a Ward cross down on his chest but his square pass to Bryson came to nothing when he maybe could have shot. Bryson fired over after some neat build-up play and he then exchanged passes with Russell before his effort flashed wide of the near post. Hughes had a penalty appeal turned away after he went down in the area and Grant was quick off his line again to beat Dominic Poleon to the ball after a through ball from McCormack. Leeds were pressing as the game entered the final quarter of an hour but with twelve minutes to go Bryson fed Hughes who side-stepped a defender before curling an effort into the far corner with his right foot to confirm the victory.
