Another moment of woeful defending cost Derby County as Jack Hobbs headed home completely unmarked from a corner to give Nottingham Forest a 1-0 victory at the City Ground. Forest opened strongly and Radoslaw Majewski was denied by Lee Grant inside the opening ten minutes but The Rams got themselves back into the game and saw more of the ball but their final pass was not quite there with Craig Bryson`s swerving effort the closest they came to finding the net. Jamie Ward failed to clear his lines and lost a challenge with Eric Lichaj that ended with the fullback`s effort being deflected narrowly over the top and the marking from the resulting corner was poor allowing Hobbs to power home a header at the near post. The expected onslaught from The Rams didn`t come in the second period and Richard Keogh was sent off after picking up a second yellow card when he was adjudged to have fouled Chris Cohen in the area although Grant saved the resulting spotkick.
Derby County went with their strongest line-up with injuries restricting options and they were soon under pressure as Forest looked to score early. The Derby back line stood strong as their hosts hit a number of long balls towards Darius Henderson although they played some football as well and Radoslaw Majewski made room just outside the error and forced Lee Grant into a full length save to tip his effort around the post. The Rams broke quickly from the corner but the final ball let them down when Craig Bryson couldn`t find Will Hughes on the edge of the Forest area.
Jack Hobbs took the ball off the toe of Jamie Ward inside the area and Bryson`s effort from twenty-five yards flew just the wrong side of the post as Derby were dominating possession without carving out clear-cut chances and Johnny Russell just failed to reach a Craig Forsyth cross with the ball hitting a defender and falling into the grateful arms of Karl Darlow. Ward failed to clear his lines and was then weak into a challenge giving Eric Lichaj time to get in a shot that took a deflection and flew just over the top but from the resulting corner Hobbs was left completely unmarked to power in a header at the near post to put Forest ahead somewhat against the run of play. It nearly got worse in the dyeing moments of the half when a cross into the area wasn`t dealt with and Grant stood up to deny Jamie Mackie at his near post.
Forest sat back at the start of the second period and whilst Derby again enjoyed more possession they struggled to unlock their hosts defence. Henderson somehow headed wide with the goal at his mercy from Andy Reid`s dinked ball into the area and in a rare moment of danger at the other end Chris Martin`s shot was deflected over the top after a corner saw Will Hughes tee him up inside the area. Hughes` freekick from the edge of the area was comfortably held by Darlow but at the other end the game seemed to have been taken beyond their reach when Richard Keogh slid in on Chris Cohen as the ran into the area with the referee pointing to the spot and showing a second yellow card for the foul reducing Derby to ten men. Henderson put the ball on the spot but Grant clawed his effort round the post to keep his side in the match. A long ball forward was flicked on to substitute Conor Sammon who took a touch but his low effort was held by Darlow and Reid nearly doubled the lead in added time after Forest broke on the counter attack but his low effort from the edge of the area was kept out low to Grant`s left.
