A double from Johnny Russell earned Derby County a point as they drew 2-2 with Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium to extend their unbeaten start away from home this season. The Rams fell behind to a curled finish from Alex Baptiste on five minutes but were soon in front thanks to two close range finished from Russell after being teed up by Craig Bryson on both occasions. Chris Eagles` levelled the scores just before the break with a shot the skidded off the wet turf to beat Lee Grant and with chances at a premium in the second half the sides finished all square to share the points.
Nigel Clough went with the same side who won comfortably at Millwall at the weekend and they started brightly when Jamie Ward teed up Adam Smith on the edge of the area but the Tottenham loanee curled his shot over the top but Jake Buxton then had to be on his toes to stop Chris Eagles getting his shot on goal at the other end. Alex Baptiste headed over from Lee Chung-Yong`s corner as Bolton exerted some pressure and they took the lead on five minutes when the South Korean chested the ball down to Baptiste who curled a neat finish into the far corner of the net giving Lee Grant no chance.
The lead lasted for just two minutes when a neat move ended with Craig Bryson firing a low ball across goal and Johnny Russell converted the chance at the back post. The same players combined again ten minutes later when Will Hughes had a shot blocked and the ball broke to Bryson and his cross from near the byline picked out Russell again for a simple tap-in to put them ahead. Eagles looked dangerous as the home side fought back and his near post effort was well kept out by Grant but the former Manchester United trainee got the better of the Derby goalkeeper with four minutes to go until halftime when his effort from outside the area skipped off the wet turf and found the far corner of the net to leave the sides level at the break.
Both sides took a more conservative approach at the start of the second period after an open first-half although Smith came close to putting The Rams back in front when Chris Martin found Jamie Ward down the right and his cross picked out Smith but his goalbound effort was hacked away by Matthew Mills. David Ngog had Bolton`s last meaningful effort with just under fifteen minutes to go when he headed just wide from a Jay Spearing`s cross and with that went the last clear cut chance as the sides settled for a point each.
