Baggies Down Rams

Goals from Graham Dorrans and Markus Rosenberg gave West Bromwich Albion a 2-0 victory over Derby County at Pride Park in The Rams` final first team pre-season friendly. With John Brayford having left for Cardiff City Kieron Freeman started at rightback and it looked like possibly the starting line-up for next week`s first game of the season as Nigel Clough named a strong side.

Nicolas Anelka brought a save out of Lee Grant at his near post in the early stages when he picked up Liam Ridgewell`s low cut back and he was involved again not long afterwards when Shan Long couldn`t quite bring his lofted pass under control and Grant was out to take the ball of his toe. Jamie Ward had a weak effort easily held by Ben Foster and Chris Martin then headed wide from a Ward corner as The Rams got back into the game and Will Hughes` effort from the edge of the area was clawed away by Ben Foster. West Brom were keeping hold of the ball well and they took the lead with just over five minutes to go until the break when Morrison dummied a Brunt pass and Dorrans fired in an unstoppable shot from twenty-five yards to give Grant no chance.

Johnny Russell acrobatically volleyed over from a Jeff Hendrick cross in the early moments of the second period and the summer signing from Dundee United was nearly through on goal from a Martin pass but Dawson got back to crowd him out. With The Rams having a more compact shape after the break chances were at a premium and Martin couldn`t get his effort on target following a run and cross from substitute Ben Davies. Conor Sammon was introduced for the closing stages and his quick turn on the edge of the area ended with a low shot that flew wide of the mark and his run into the Albion area moments later ended with Foster tipping a Michael Jacobs effort over the top. As The Rams looked for the equaliser they were exposed at the back and Rosenberg swept home a cross from Jones in the dieing moments to secure the victory for his side.

Derby County: Grant, Freeman (Davies 73), Buxton, Keogh, Forsyth, Hendrick, Bryson, Hughes (Jacobs 84), Ward, Martin, Russell (Sammon 78).

Subs not used: Legzdins , Eustace, Gjokaj, Ball, Hoganson.
