Pre-Season Form Continues

Goals from Chris Martin and Conor Sammon saw Derby County beat Burton Albion 2-0 at the Pirelli Stadium last night to keep up their run of results in pre-season. With the new season fast approaching Nigel Clough gave longer run outs to his starters with an eye on a potential line-up for the opening day encounter with Blackburn Rovers in just under two weeks time.

The Rams lined up in a 4-3-3 formation and Jamie Ward was the first to threaten after four minutes but his freekick flew over the top. Whilst they were seeing a lot of the ball the chances were not flowing for the visitors although Chris Martin`s snapshot did bring a save out for Dean Lyness in the Burton goal. Lee Grant palmed away a Michael Symes header in a rare chance for the home side and a flowing move saw John Brayford curl an effort narrowly wide before Martin swept home from a low cross by Craig Forsyth to give his side the lead on the stroke of halftime.

Half-time sub Adam Reed nearly found an equaliser when he stretched to meet a low ball across the area but Grant kept his effort out with a fine reaction save and Will Hughes` dipping volley was not far away in a tight opening to the second period. Dunn beat away an effort from Ward before Hussey hit an effort on his weaker right foot that was easily held by Grant. Michael Jacobs had a great opportunity to double the lead when he tripped in the area but his spotkick was kept out by Dunn only for Conor Sammon to tie up the win with a header from a Hoganson cross in the dieing moments to maintain The Rams run of pre-season results.

Derby County: Grant (GK); Brayford, Keogh, Buxton, Forsyth; Eustace (Davies 68), Hendrick (Freeman 83), Hughes (Hoganson 86); Russell (Sammon 68), Ward (Jacobs 62), Martin (Bennett 80).

Subs not used: Legzdins.
