Rams Cruise To Opening Win
Derby County got their pre-season schedule off to a winning start with a 6-1 victory over Bohemians in Dublin with Nigel Clough giving a run out to the majority of his first-team squad after changing all eleven players at the break.
New signing Johnny Russell didn`t take long to make an impact on his debut when he turned home a low cross from the left by Michael Jacobs just nine minutes in to give The Rams the lead with his left footed effort finding the far corner of the net. The home side found an equaliser five minutes later when a ball over the top was held up by Dinny Corcoran and his lay back set up Chris Lyons to fire into the bottom corner giving Lee Grant no chance.
The Rams were playing with three in the centre of defence with John Eustace showing his versatility as the third defender in the middle. Mason Bennett, deployed in midfield, created a second goal for Russell just before the half hour mark as his run down the right ended with a cross that the former Dundee United striker despatched with a clinical header. Eustace came close with a header from a corner that flashed wide of the mark before Lyons came close to his second of the afternoon when his effort crashed back off the bar after neat work by Byrne.
The mass changes at halftime did not disrupt The Rams` rhythm and two goals in the space of a minute put the game out of sight. Callum Ball robbed a defender inside the Bohemians` penalty area and converted from close range before another defensive error saw Conor Sammon take the ball from a defender down the left before cutting back for Ben Davies to rifle home from ten yards.
Dean Marshall kept out a curling effort from Sammon after he was setup by Jamie Ward and Paul Coutts scored the fifth of the afternoon when he fired home from distance as the ball dropped to him thirty yards out. With just under ten minutes to go Sammon added the goal his performance deserved when he flicked home a corner from the right to round out the scoring and complete a satisfactory workout for his side.
