Chesterfield 3 - Derby County 1

B2Net Stadium

Young Rams Beaten

A young Derby County side were beaten 3-1 by Chesterfield at the B2Net Stadium as The Rams' completed their pre-season campaign ahead of the clash with Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night. With that game in mind Nigel Clough played an inexperienced side and included a number of players trying to earn a move to Pride Park. Chesterfield, with a more experienced side, made most of the running and lead at the break following a strike from Marc Richards in a half of few chances. After the break things were a little more even but a double from Adam Bowery put the game out of reach before a late strike from Steve Davies pulled one back for Derby.

Trialists Valentin Gjokaj, Danny Barrera and Roope Riski, a Finland Under-21 international, were all given starts in a young looking Derby side and chances were at a premium in the opening stages. The Rams suffered an injury worry when Jeff Hendrick, playing in the centre of defence, fell awkwardly and was carried off with a potential wrist injury, he was replaced Josh Lelan and Steve Davies also came on in place of Michael Hoganson to make his first appearance of pre-season. Ben Davies had the first real chance of the match when Jamie Ward got away down the left but the former Notts County man couldn't make a proper connection with his cross. Chesterfield took the lead when Marc Richards was first to the rebound when his initial shot was saved by Adam Legzdins and his right-foot finish found the bottom corner of the net on thirty-six minutes. The lead was nearly doubled when Legzdins misjudged a cross-shot from Danny Whittaker but the ball hit the bar and the home side went in a goal ahead at the break.

Steve Davies was moved up-front at half-time with Tom Naylor switching to left-back and Richard had the first effort of the second period but he could only poke wide from Westcarr's cross. Davies' measured finish was the wrong side of the post on the hour and Nigel Clough introduced Mason Bennett from the bench shortly afterwards to partner him in attack. Legzdins made two saves from Boden and Whittaker as Chesterfield remained on top and Bowery then scored two in quick succession to seal the result. He rose highest to head home from Tendayi Darikwa`s right-wing cross and then calmly finished after being played through on goal to put the game out of The Rams' reach. They did pull a goal back in injury time when Ward burst clear and his low cross was converted by Steve Davies at the near post but it was too late to make an impact on the result.

Derby County: Legzdins, Naylor, Hoganson (S Davies 26), Bailey (Dales 67), Gjokaj (Adams 89), Hendrick (Lelan 26), B Davies, Barrera (Richards 73), Riski (Bennett 60), Doyle, Ward.
