Rams Claim Second Victory
Derby County defeated Northampton Town 4-3 at the Sixfields Stadium on Tuesday evening with goals from Mason Bennett, Jamie Ward and two from Theo Robinson securing The Rams' second victory of pre-season.
Mark O'Brien was handed a start alongside Valentin Gjokaj at the heart of Derby's defence in a very young side as Nigel Clough's side lined up in a 4-3-3- formation and the youngster did well early well when blocking a close range effort from Clive Platt. Tom Naylor headed wide from a nice delivery from Ben Davies and Will Hughes and Mason Bennett combined well before Bennett forced Snedker into a save from twenty-five yards. Bennett continued to be a threat and he was again denied by Snedker when a nice ball from Hughes put him through on goal.
Bennett then headed just wide of the mark from another Davies cross before he found the mark from six yards with a neat header from a ball from the same player to open the scoring. Theo Robinson doubled the lead four minutes later when Snedker made a hash of cross which rebounded off of the former Millwall players' back and bounced into the net. The home side then pulled one back before the break with Harding fired home from inside the area from a knock down from Platt to cut the lead.
Robinson nearly increased the lead five minutes into the second period when James Bailey sent him through on goal and he went round Snedkers only to see his finish hit the outside of the post. |However, Robinson did find the net for his second of the night with just over twenty minutes to go when he diverted yet another cross from Davies into the net from close-range. A number of substitutions followed and two of them nearly combined moments after coming on when Paul Coutts run and cross found Nathan Tyson but he flashed his effort over the top and a third substitute, Michael Jacobs, then hit the bar with a curling effort from twenty yards.
With four minutes to go Jamie Ward reacted first to a knock down from Richard Keogh to put his side 4-1 in front but two late goals for Northampton made the final score a little closer than the game itself. Firstly, Langmead fired home from a tight angle before Jake Buxton's foul on the same player gave away a last minute penalty and Chris Hackett sent Deeney the wrong way from the spot to make the final score 4-3.
