Jacobs Cracker Wins It For Rams

Michael Jacobs scored a second-half winner as Derby County ran out 1-0 winners against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium to claim their first victory of their pre-season campaign. Nigel Clough started with trialists Valentin Gjokaj and Michael Hoganson at the back with Ross Atkins lining up against his parent club as he started in goal for Burton.

Atkins was called into action inside the opening ten minutes when he had to react quickly to a deflected Nathan Tyson effort to keep his side from going behind and Jeff Hendrick also volleyed over the top when well placed as The Rams made the running in the early stages. Jacobs and Jamie Ward both had efforts that they failed to find the target with and the home side came close to taking the lead when Fielding saved from Dele Adebola and Robbie Weir thumped an effort against the underside of the crossbar from the rebound.

The Rams started the second-half brightly and took the lead four minutes in when Tyson released Jacobs down the left and he cut inside and swept a neat finish into the net from 20-yards that beat Atkins for his first goal in a Derby shirt. Jacques Maghoma found the side netting from outside the area but Nigel Clough's side had the better of the chances with John Brayford having an effort cleared off the line and substitute James Caton having a well hit shot turned away by Atkins. Mark O'Brien was amongst a number of substitutes used in the last twenty minutes as he made his first appearance since injury last season and Ben Davies was denied by Atkins in the closing stages as The Rams came out with a 1-0 victory.

Derby County: Fielding (Deeney 60); Brayford (Naylor 70), Gjokaj (Buxton 77) Keogh (O`Brien 77), Hoganson (Bailey 77); Coutts (Doyle 70), Hendrick (B. Davies 70), Bryson (Hughes 45), Jacobs (Caton 60); Ward (Bennett 60), Tyson (Robinson 60).
