Robinson Makes The Difference

Theo Robinson`s eighth goal of the season handed Derby County a place in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup after a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Pride Park. Robinson scrambled home from close range after Craig Bryson`s low cross found him and Jamie Ward and Callum Ball also came close in a first half that saw Derby make most of the running. The game became a little more scrappy after the break with chances at a premium and Paul Green had a header saved and Ward curled a freekick wide in the closing stages as Derby claimed their fourth victory on the bounce to advance in the competition that saw them go out to non-league Crawley Town last season.

Nigel Clough went with the same side that claimed a victory at the KC Stadium whilst Dougie Freedman made eight changes to his Crystal Palace side including bringing in former Derby man Lewis Price in goal. The Rams started brightly seeing plenty of the ball in the opening stages and they took the lead on eight minutes after some neat build-up play saw Craig Bryson break to the left edge of the area and his low cross was scrambled home by Theo Robinson from close range. Robinson then brought a fine save out of Price with a fierce effort from the edge of the area and Jamie Ward fired narrowly wide from twenty-five yards as the pressure continued.

Antonio Pedroza dragged a shot well wide of the mark with his sides` first chance but Derby continued on the front foot with Ward and Callum Ball going close with shots from inside the area and John Brayford`s left footed effort giving a fairly simple catch to Price. Palace fought back into the match in the closing stages but The Rams deservedly went in a goal ahead at the break with Frank Fielding not have a save to make.

Ball and Ward again forced saves from Price on the opening stages of the second period as Derby looked for a second but Palace were finding their feet although Fielding was not troubled by a couple of long range efforts from the visitors. Chances were at a premium with neither side able to create a clear cut opportunity until Paul Green had a header tipped over by Price and Ward`s curling freekick was not far away in the final ten minutes. Palace couldn`t create anything in the closing stages and The Rams saw out the match to claim their place in the hat for Sunday`s draw.
