Derby County claimed a 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground with a hard working display after playing nearly the entire game with ten men after falling behind early on. Frank Fielding collided with Ishmael Miller in the area and the referee pointed to spot and showed the keeper a red card inside the first minute. Andy Reid sent substitute Adam Legzdins the wrong way from the spot and although Forest kept the pressure up the keeper didn`t have another save to make before Jamie Ward beat two defenders along the bye-line and scored the equaliser just before the half-hour mark. Legzdins was called into action in the early stages of the second half before Jeff Hendrick missed a glorious chance when he headed wide from a Ben Davies cross. The youngster made up for the miss on seventy-two minutes firing a low effort past Lee Camp and despite some late pressure The Rams saw out the remaining minutes to claim a famous victory.
Tomasz Cywka came in for his first start of the season and there were also starts for Theo Robinson and Gareth Roberts as Nigel Clough made three changes to the side that lost to Coventry City last time out. There was also a place on the bench for Nathan Tyson against his former club as he returned from injury. Having conceded early goals in both of their previous two visits to the City Ground it was a little bit of the same when The Rams found themselves behind with virtually the first attack of the game. Ishmael Miller won a header and then received the ball back from Matt Derbyshire and ran at goal; Frank Fielding threw himself in front of the ball to stop the shot and collided with the striker with the referee pointing to the spot after Gareth Roberts cleared off the line. Fielding was harshly shown a red card and substitute keeper Adam Legzdins was sent the wrong way from the spot by Andy Reid to give the home side the lead.
Cywka was the player to make way for the former Burton Albion keeper having lasted just over a minute. Forest kept up the pressure as they looked to take advantage of their numerical advantage but despite dominating the possession and picking up a number of corners Legzdins was not called upon to make a save. The Rams found an equaliser on twenty-nine minutes, Chris Cohen went down inside the Derby half but with the referee waiving play on Jason Shackell picked out Jamie Ward wide on the left and he skipped past two defenders along the bye-line before slipping an effort under Lee Camp to the level scores. Derbyshire had a shout for penalty turned down after tangling with Roberts in the area and Jonathan Greening had a shot blocked with calls for handball but there was nothing in either incident as the first half came to a close.
Forest kept the pressure up at the start of the second period with Reid firing over the top after exchanging passes with Radoslaw Majewski and Miller forced Legzdins into a low save with the keeping showing safe hands. Reid threatened from a freekick from twenty-five yards but the Derby man again came out on top touching his effort round the post at the expense of a corner. Derby should have gone ahead on sixty-three minutes when Robinson found Ben Davies down the right and his crossed picked out Jeff Hendrick at the far post but with the goal at his mercy the young Irishman somehow managed to miss the target.
Nathan Tyson was introduced from the bench to the expected reception from the home fans and Forest brought on Robbie Findley who was immediately involved with a cross that just evaded Derbyshire. Wes Morgan headed over from a Lewis McGugan corner but it was The Rams who went in front with Hendrick making amends for his earlier miss. The home side failed to fully clear a corner with the ball reaching Davies on the edge of the area and he allowed Hendrick to step in and fire a low shot past Camp to spark wide celebrations in the away end. Joel Lynch cut inside John Brayford but Legzdins touched his effort over the top and Luke Chambers blasted over in added time as The Rams held on to claim a significant three points.
