Rams Ease To Doncaster Victory
Attendance: 23, 377
Derby County maintained their 100% start to the season after cruising to a 3-0 victory against Doncaster Rovers at Pride Park to move up to second in the early season table. Kevin Kilbane headed home from a Ben Davies corner inside the first ten minutes to give his side the lead, the remainder of the firsthalf was played mainly in the middle of the park with Frank Fielding not having a save to make before the break. Steve Davies headed home in The Rams` first attack of the second period and Ben Davies curled home a superb effort from the edge of the area to tie up the points. Chris Maguire came on for his league debut in the closing stages as Derby made it twelve points from twelve as they comfortably saw out the match.
Nigel Clough named an unchanged side from the team who won at Blackpool in midweek with Jeff Hendrick making his first start a Pride Park, Doncaster named former Ram Giles Barnes in their lineup and he was in for a lively return after some questionable comments following his exit as a Derby County player. Derby started quickly and were in the lead inside six minutes when Ben Davies` pinpoint delivery with a corner from the right found Kevin Kilbane and he headed powerfully home from eight yards. The Rams continued on the front foot and Ben Davies` found room on the edge of the area but his low drive was easily gathered by Gary Woods.
Jamie Ward felt his hamstring tightening up and was replaced on twenty-three minutes by Lee Croft with the change disrupting Derby`s momentum and Doncaster began to get on top enjoying some good spells of possession. Giles Barnes blazed hopelessly high and wide when well placed in the area and his run and cross down the right ended with Mark O`Brien hacking to safety with Chris Brown ready to pounce just behind him. Despite having the upper hand the visitor`s failed to test Frank Fielding and trailed at the break.
Derby came out of the blocks quickly again in the second period and they doubled their lead twenty seconds in when Ben Davies` left footed cross picked out Steve Davies and he headed back across goal and into the bottom corner for his third goal of the season. Milan Lalkovic fired a shot over the top on the hour mark and The Rams virtually secured the points three minutes later when Croft won the ball back on the edge of the area and Ben Davies took a touch before curling a near effort into the far corner beyond the reach of Woods.
Theo Robinson came on in place of Steve Davies with just over twenty minutes to go and his pace caused some alarm bells at the back for the visitors on more than one occasion, his neat turn and run saw Woods gather his effort at the near post with one such opportunity. Chris Maguire was also introduced from the bench in place of Craig Bryson who had worked his socks off all afternoon. Doncaster came back into the game again towards the closing stages and had a couple of long range efforts off target before James Bailey headed off the line from a Simon Gillett effort in the final shot of note as The Rams saw out the match with ease to claim their fourth win from four and maintain their excellent start.
