Calvin Zola and Greg Pearson scored the goals as Burton Albion defeated a Derby County XI 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium to win back the Bass Vase Trophy. Adam Legzdins, Tomasz Cywka, Lee Croft and Theo Robinson were the only members of The Rams first team to lineup whilst there was a surprise inclusion for Nathan Fox who was released by Notts County this summer. Derby started brightly and Ryan Connolly forced Ross Atkins into a low save early on and the young keeper, on trial with a view to a loan move to Burton, was forced into another save when Connolly setup Cywka and Robinson blasted over the top from six yards when he pushed out the young Pole`s effort. Mark O`Brien headed off the line from Adam Bolder and Legzdins had to be on his toes to keep out a John McGrath effort. The home side took the lead just before the half-hour mark when Bolder won the ball in the area and squared for Greg Pearson to convert from close range. Aaron Webster then headed into the side netting from a few yards out with the goal at his mercy and Robinson had a shot deflected just wide at the other end with the final chance of the half.
Ball forced Atkins into a sharp reaction save with a header in the opening moments of the second period and he was inches away from goal from twenty-five yards moments later. Croft fired another effort from outside the area that was not far away and Alex Witham pulled The Rams level when substitute Aaron Cole drifted a ball into the area and he timed his run to perfection before calmly sweeping the ball beyond Atkins. Academy youngster Mason Bennett, only fifteen years old, was introduced from the bench for the final twenty minutes but it was Burton who retook the lead when Cleveland Taylor swept a low ball across the box from the right and the unmarked Calvin Zola tapped in from close range to put his side back in front. Legzdins was called into action as both Zola and Corbett tested him and Robinson and Cywka came close at the other end but they couldn`t find the equaliser as the home side held on for the win.
Derby County: Legzdins, Jones (Cole 30), Fox, Witham, O'Brien (Bennett 65), Lelan, Croft, Cywka, Ball, Robinson (Chaterjee 82), Connolly.
Subs: Severn, Dawkins, Dillon
