Rams Slip to Matlock Defeat
The Rams fell to their first defeat of pre-season as an admittedly under-strength side lost to Matlock Town.
Two early goals from The Gladiators put the home side firmly in control but strikes from Tomasz Cywka and Theo Robinson drew Derby level, before Matlock hit the winner on the hour mark.
Nigel Clough's side, featuring only three first-team players: Robinson, Cywka and Lee Croft, endured a nightmare start at Causeway lane and were two goals down within the opening 16 minutes of the game. With 12 played, Tyeisse Nightingale nodded home from six yards after a pull-back from James Knowles and soon after James Lukic scored his side's second headed goal of the game with a bullet from a Chris Bettney free kick.
Youngster Callum Ball twice went close to pulling a goal back for he Rams before Polish striker Cywka did what the Derby youth-product could not. The ex-Wigan man was fed by Ball and smashed the ball into the top corner with his left foot.
Only two minutes later, Derby were back on level terms. Robinson produced a composed one-on-one finish after being set clear on goal by Irish youngster Kealan Dillon. Cywka almost put the Rams infront with a 20-yard free kick but hi excellent strike was tipped behind by the Matlock keeper.
Half-time came and went, and Matlock went in front again just before the hour. Derby keeper James Severn clawed away Lukic's header but sub Lee Whittington scrambled home the rebound to win the game for The Gladiators.
