With the pressure starting to build, Paul Jewell could do with a win in this one to try and clear the dark clouds currently forming aroud Pride Park. Quoted today as saying this is the lowest he has felt in his time as a manager, it's going to take a marked change in performance, if not results, to lift the team and the fans after a disappointing result against Southampton. With changes in the offing in the starting line-up for this Carling Cup clash he'll be hoping the introduction of two of his summer signings will toughen The Rams team and hopes to see them battle their way to a win. Tyrone Mears returns to his former club hoping that the added pressure of playing in front of the Derby faithful will be lifted with this game coming away from home, the anxiety in the crowd certainly seemed to effect the players at the weekend.
Preston North End have started the season well with victories away at Ipswich and at home to Crystal Palace added to a draw at Hillsbrough at the weekend leaving them currently 4th in the table, a 2-0 victory over Chesterfield in the previous round setting up this clash. Preston knocked Derby out of the FA Cup 4-1 at Pride Park last season and have had the better of the clashes over the last few years with the then North End manager Billy Davies' side knocking The Rams out of the play-offs during George Burleys shot reign at Derby.
I know people are doubting me but, hopefully, I can prove to them that I can do the job. I know I can do the job.
Paul Jewel talking to the Derby Evening Telegraph about the pressure surrounding his job at the moment.
Callum Davidson is doubtful with a knee problem with Chris Brown, Wayne Henderson, Neil Trotman and Liam Chilvers all set to miss out through injury.
Always looked to have the skill to make it at the top level but didn't quite make it with West Brom in the Premiership. Has been in fine goalscoring form in the early weeks of the season for North End and looks to be benefitting from a regular starting role after having been in and out for his former clubs over the last couple of years.
Miles Addison set to start in midfield and summer signings Paul Connolly and Jordan Stewart look set to make their debuts in the fullback positions as Paul Jewell looks to make up to five changes to change the team from Saturday. Nacer Barazite is set to miss out with Arsenal not allowing the youngster to play in Carling Cup clashes.
In fine form in the last few games keeping The Rams in touching distance when they could have been dead and buried by halftime in each of the last two fixtures, looks to be recapturing his form, now for the rest of the team....
Doncaster Rovers (H) 0-1
Lincoln City (H) 3-1 aet Ellington (3)
Bristol City (A) 1-1 Green
Southampton (H) 0-1
Preston North End
Ipswich Town (A) 2-1 McKenna, Whaley
Chesterfield (H) 2-0 Mellor (2)
Crystal Palace (H) 2-0 Nicholson, Chaplow
Sheffield Wednesday (A) 1-1 Chaplow
Things aren't looking good for Derby at the moment and even with the team changes already announced it would take a massive turnaround in performance from Saturday for Derby to get anything from this game. Preston have started in fine form this season and I'm afraid I can't see anything but a Preston win tonight, 2-1 to the Lillywhites.
