Riggott heading home to the Rams
The Rams 'goals against column` is the worst in the Premier League and to make things worse the 47 goals against is the worst in the whole of the football league.
Paul Jewell has stated his next signing will be a central defender and it looks like he will bring home a former player in Chris Riggott from Middlesbrough to bolster the flagging Rams backline.
Riggott is currently out of favour at Middlesbrough behind Jonathan Woodgate, Robert Huth and the emergence of David Wheater. It is thought the Rams have asked for permission to talk to him with a view to a £2m transfer back to Pride Park.
Another plus for the Rams is that Riggott isn`t cup-tied, after he was surprisingly left out of the squad at Bristol City in the third round. This was hard to take for Riggott as Boro were missing Jonathan Woodgate due to a hamstring problem - and Riggott who has fallen down the pecking order at the Riverside believes a fresh start would help him.
The 27-year-old has had a series of injuries which have hampered his career at the Riverside, but the decision of Gareth Southgate to leave him out of the cup tie could see him turn his back on Boro.
Earlier in the season Riggott said: "It is difficult to be in the stands when you see a couple of centre-backs coming in."
After being strongly linked with Liverpool in the 2001-02 season he eventually joined Middlesbrough from the Rams, with Malcolm Christie for a combined fee of £3m in January 2003 (though this could rise to £5m in the future).
The centre-back is Derby-born and, with family remaining in the area, could favour a return to the East Midlands.
