Billy Davies` Rams look for record

The Rams travel to the St Mary`s Stadium today looking to bridge a 38-year gap when they face Southampton. They are bidding for an eighth consecutive win in all competitions, a feat they last achieved in the 1968-69 season.

On that occasion they set a club record nine straight League victories in March and April 1969. That run sent the Rams, then coached by Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, to the top of the Division two table and into the old First Division.

1968-69 winning run -
March 15th - Huddersfield Town (H) W 1-0 - (McFarland)
March 22nd - Oxford United (A) W 2-0 - (Hector2)
March 29th - Aston Villa (A) W 1-0 - (Simmons O,G)
April 2nd - Fulham (A) W 1-0 - (Wignall)
April 5th - Bolton (H) W 5-1 - (McFarland, O`Hare, Hector, Carlin, Wignall)
April 7th - Sheffield United W 1-0 - (Durban)
April 12th - Millwall (A) W 1-0 - (Carlin)
April 16th - Norwich City (A) W 4-1 - (Carlin 2, O`Hare, Wignall)
April 19th - Bristol City (H) W 5-0 - (Durban 3, Hinton, Hector)

It`s interesting to see five of the Rams victories in the 1968-69, were 1-0, which is the same as today`s winning sequence. Their current run of seven wins includes five in the Championship and two FA Cup successes, and they also boast the best away record in the division going into the Southampton clash.

Billy Davies said: "It is another tough test but not the toughest because we have had many others.
"It is only one of 16 tough matches we have remaining at the business end of the season. As difficult as it will be, we will go down there with confidence knowing that anything picked up on the road is a bonus."

Derby head to the south-coast today with another large away following, they have sold more than 3,000 of their allocation of 3,200. Let`s hope the long trip is a successful one!!!!
