Clough Backing New Signing

Nigel Clough has backed new signing Johnny Russell to make an impact joining from Dundee United and thinks the added competition for places can only be good news for the team.

Russell is a former Scotland Under-21 international and scored 20 goals in 38 appearances in the Scottish Premier League last season. With The Rams reportedly having watched him over a prolonged period Clough was happy to secure his top transfer target early in the summer break to add to the captures of Chris Martin and Lee Grant. Having returned from holiday to complete a medical and sign a four year deal Russell has spoken about his excitement at the possibility of being part of something special that is building at the club. Clough seems equally impressed with the signing and told dcfc.co.uk:

"Johnny is intelligent; he is the right sort of age that we look for. We think he can improve and he wants to prove himself in English football. He is a similar to Jamie Ward in some ways; he has played out wide on occasion, although like Jamie, I believe his preference is to play through the middle. We cannot wait to get him in at pre-season and see him in a Derby County shirt. It will be nice to have a few options on the bench and we believe Johnny will compliment Chris Martin, Jamie Ward and Conor Sammon."
