Nigel Clough thinks transfer target Michael Jacobs would fit into his Derby County squad and is the type of player that would enhance the team as discussions between The Rams and Northampton Town are reportedly ongoing in relation to the 20-year-old midfielder. Jacobs has been The Cobblers player of the season for the last two years and can play on either flank in a wide midfield, a position Clough has already stated he is looking to strengthen.
Jacobs made his debut for Northampton at the age of seventeen and has gone on to make 87 appearances and score 11 goals since then the most famous of which came at Anfield as his side claimed a 2-2 draw and went on to win the penalty shout-out against Liverpool in a League Cup tie in September 2010. Whilst Clough has admitted that other clubs are interested in the player he believes Derby County can offer him the ideal platform at this stage of his career and that he fits the profile of the type of player he wants to bring in telling the Derby Evening Telegraph:
'He's a player we like and he fits into the profile of a young player with potential who could play a part next season. He certainly has the ability to improve and go on to play at a higher level."
"As long as we can agree with the club, it should be a positive outcome. You never know until they actually sign on that dotted line but we're only about an hour up the road from where he is based, in Kettering, and I think he'd fit in well to our young squad.'
