'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Stockport County 0 -1 Derby County

Michael Johnson's 44th minute goal gave the Rams a welcome (and rare) Carling Cup victory over League 2 side Stockport County.

Although the Rams were never seriously tested, Stockport gave a decent account of themselves and had a number of half chances through the game, although the better opportunities were created by Derby.

The goal came just before the interval - Ryan Smith's shot was blocked by the Stockport keeper Spencer, the ball falling kindly for skipper Michael Johnson to prod home from close range.

The game fizzled out somewhat in the 2nd half, with Billy Davies happy to see his side progress to the next round - he told the Derby Evening Telegraph: 'That was a very important win for us. It's our first win in this competition for a few years and it's always nice to come away from home and win of course.

'It wasn't pretty but the lads put in a very professional performance. That was a vital win for us.

'We defended well all night, that was a good clean sheet. It keeps our little run going too. That's just one defeat in five games so far this season. I'm proud of the lads.'

Man of the Match: MICHAEL JOHNSON - Johnno has defied the critics and has shown his best form for Derby in the last few games, as well as getting the all-important goal here. Keep it up Johnno!!
