After being named the supporters` and clubs player of the year John Brayford has completed a superb first season at Pride Park by being named Vital Derby County player of the year after polling nearly half of the vote beating Robbie Savage who finished second with 30% of the votes cast. The two influential players were a long way ahead of the competition with the next closest players, Shaun Barker and Steve Davies, both receiving only 6% of the vote each.
Brayford, signed from Crewe in a joint deal with James Bailey in the summer, started every game for The Rams in their Championship season along with the two disappointing cup defeats and his marauding runs from rightback were a key feature of the fine run of results leading up to Christmas. He also showed his flexibility being used in the centre of defence and at leftback during an unsettled period after Christmas when injuries, suspensions and the departure of squad players forced Nigel Clough`s hand to move the highly rated defender to cover gaps in his starting line-up. With a hopefully larger squad and a more settled side next season Brayford can look to concentrate on his best position at rightback after his form made him one of the first names on the team-sheet each week during the preceding campaign.
The full results of the voting for Vital Derby County player of the year were as follows:
John Brayford - 44%
Gareth Roberts - 4%
Shaun Barker - 6%
Daniel Ayala - 2%
Paul Green - 2%
Robbie Savage - 30%
Tomasz Cykwa - 0%
Ben Davies - 0%
Stephen Pearson - 2%
Alberto Bueno - 2%
Jamie Ward - 2%
