Burton Albion XI 1 Derby County XI 3

Three quick fire goals saw a Derby County XI come from behind to win the Bass Charity Vase against Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium with a 3-1 victory. Having missed a first half penalty Luke Varney made amends with two goals in three minutes shortly after his side had fallen behind to a James EIlison penalty in the second half and a fine solo goal from David Martin sealed the victory as The Rams lifted the trophy for the seventeenth time in their history but the first time since 1996.

A young looking Derby side started the game brightly and David Martin had a firm shot blocked within the first sixty seconds and Luke Varney got his head on the resulting corner but could not direct his effort on target. The Rams continued to push the game with Dean Moxey having another effort blocked and Luke Varney shooting straight at the keeper with another opportunity.

Burton eased their way back into the match and Adam Bolder and Jack Dyer both came close with efforts from range but Derby were presented with an opportunity to break the deadlock on 42 minutes when Moxey was brought down in the area and the referee awarded a spot kick. Luke Varney was handed the responsibility but he fired his penalty high over the crossbar and he couldn`t find the mark again on the stroke of halftime when a neat turn on the edge of the area made room for the shot but his effort flew over the top.

A slow start to the second half found neither side being able to create an opening until the 53rd minute when Burton were awarded a penalty for a foul on Phillips and James Ellison showed how it is done by sending Saul Deeney the wrong way from the spot . Phillips nearly doubled the lead a few minutes later but Deeney made a fine one-handed save to deny him and it proved to be a turning point as Luke Varney found room in the Burton penalty area just after the hour mark to lash a volley into the roof of the net to level the scores.

Three minutes later Varney struck again when David Martin`s low effort was only parried back out by Burton keeper Platt and he was first to react to slam the ball into the net from close range. The scoring was completed on 68 minutes with a superb solo goal form David Martin who showed a turn of pace and beat two defenders before curling a right footed effort into the top corner of the net giving Platt no chance. The game finished at a leisurely pace with the only moment of note being the re-introduction of Jake Buxton for his first appearance in pre-season with twenty minutes to go as The Rams saw out the victory and Luke Varney was named man of the match.

Derby County: Deeney (Atkins 86), Mills (Garton 72), Hendrick, O'Brien, Moxey, Abalimba (Buxton 69), Pringle (Connolly 73), Bowen, Langford, Martin, Varney.
