Nigel Clough has admitted that he's looking into the possibility of bringing Tommy Smith back to Derby.
"We've made an inquiry to Portsmouth.
But it's a bit difficult with the situation down there at the moment. It's one we'll keep pursuing."
Clough wants to bring Smith, who scored 21 goals during his two seasons with the Rams between 2004 and 2006, back to Pride Park on loan until the end of the season however the Rams boss concedes that it'll be difficult to make this deal happen.
"As soon as we make the inquiry, he goes and plays and scores. The major snag is the FA Cup, which I'm sure he'll want to be involved in.
We made an inquiry last week and we've been trying to get in touch with the agent, the administrators and the manager to see if Tommy wants to come or not.
If not Tommy, we'll try for one or two others as well. But there's not many available strikers around at the minute."
Clough was talking to BBC Derby.
I'd be happy with see Smith return but I don't think he'll leave Portsmouth, who he signed for from Watford in August, at the moment with the FA Cup semi-final match on the horizon.
