'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Case For The Defence

The second international break of the season is already upon us and with eleven games played Vital Derby take a look at the new signings brought to Pride Park by Nigel Clough.

Clough brought in seven new signings on a permanent basis over the summer and, with four 'emergency` loans added since the transfer window closed, there has been an influx of new players compared to last season`s squad. It`s been an up and down start to the season so far with little consistency in results or team selection and a number of niggling injuries making it difficult for a settled side to develop.

In this first article we take a look at the revamped defence:

13 Saul Deeney - Seems to have been brought to the club as a backup/third choice with little to no chance of actually playing in the first team judging by some of Nigel Clough`s comments. Whilst there is obviously a need for a keeper for the 'development` squad, it seems strange to have a keeper brought in specifically for that purpose with no chance of making a start in the first team.

5/10

14 Shaun Barker - Has had a mixed start to his Derby career suffering from injuries pre-season and then a dip in form when first brought into the side. Has gradually grown with each minute spent on the pitch and looks as though he can be a useful addition given a run of games. Had the start of a decent looking partnership with Dean Leacock for the one game they completed together.

6/10

17 Jake Buxton - Has the hunger and desire demanded by Nigel Clough and gives his all even if he has been caught out once or twice in his early run in the team. Came in as a replacement on the opening day and, to be fair to him, put in a performance that made it impossible to leave him out. A big, strong central defender who dominates in the air but can struggle a little with positioning, this may come with time under Clough. May struggle to regain his starting place with everyone fit but is a solid backup when needed.

6/10

21 Dean Moxey - Seems to be widely regarded as one of the success stories of the season so far. Brought in from Exeter City and has been a steady performer at left back after stepping up a level. Looks composed on the ball and gives an extra option down the left when going forward, has had a slight dip in form over the last couple of games but looks solid enough in a sometimes struggling backline.

7/10

27 Fredrik Stoor - (on loan from Fulham) 50/50 so far, poor against Cardiff but outstanding against Wednesday. Brought in for a one month initially with the view to making it longer but provides some much needed competition at right back for Paul Connolly. Has international appearances for Sweden so should more than have the quality to start at this level.

6/10
