Derby are trying to agree a deal with Blackburn Rovers to bring their young goalkeeper Frank Fielding to Pride Park.
Nigel Clough has confirmed an interest in Fielding with Derby just awaiting a response from the Premier League side.
"We see him as a number two and he fits into what we are trying to do - groom some young players.
We are just waiting for a decision back from Blackburn."
Roy Carroll had been expected to leave Derby this summer anyway and this signing would only speed up his departure, with Clough believing it would be best for the Northern Ireland international to move on.
"It is a situation we have been in for the last few months and Roy is aware of it.
Financially, it would be best if he could try and get himself fixed up. I think he and his representatives are trying to do that.
If one or two experienced keepers in the Premier League got injured or picked up knocks, I think Roy would be absolutely ideal to step in.
He is probably too experienced and too good to be a number two in the Championship."
Clough was talking to the Evening Telegraph.
It's believed that Derby have offered around £200,000 for 21-year-old England U21 international Fielding.
Stephen Bywater is the number one at Derby, and free agent Saul Deeney could also link up with Clough again, so if Fielding can be signed as well this would be more than enough goalkeeping coverage for this season. With Lewis Price set to return at the end of the season after a loan with Brentford we'll be well stocked even if Carroll leaves, as is expected.
