Who Should Be Derby's Number 1?

The position of goalkeeper is perhaps the most important part of any team. The goalkeeper needs to keep the defenders aware of everything around them and needs to command his area. He needs to put his body on the line and be prepared to race off his line at the feet of an on-coming striker.

We at Derby are somewhat blessed in terms of us having two excellent goalkeepers in Stephen Bywater and Roy Carroll. Both keepers have failed to nail down the number 1 goalkeeper at Derby over the last two seasons with both playing for extended periods then being changed. Bywater is a great commander of the back four and his area, whereas Carroll is a great shot stopper but is prone to making mistakes, THAT Pedro Mendes 'goal' at Old Trafford in his United days. Being from Northern Ireland I don't favour Carroll, I just want one or the other as the definite number 1.

With Marcus Hahnemann being released by Reading this week could Derby ditch Carroll and sign Hahnemann as Bywater has recently signed a new contract extension with the Rams… who knows? Onwards and Upwards.

The Goose.
