Varney's Clean Slate

Luke Varney returned to Derby, from his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday, knowing that he does so with a clean slate. He is now also looking to show what he can do.

"It was a good stint at Sheffield Wednesday. I spoke to the manager about it and he basically said I could go out on loan, enjoy myself and get a few games under my belt.

"The loan was enjoyable and now I'm fit and ready to put my all into the last few games with Derby.

"It feels like a fresh start, a clean slate."

When Varney left for his loan with our Championship rivals he was concerned that it could spell an end to his Derby career just months after signing from Charlton, but he was assured by Nigel Clough that he was always in his plans for next season.

"When you go out on loan you do think 'am I needed here' but the manager said I was 100% in his plans for next season.

"It has been an unsettling season as a whole coming from Charlton, the quick change of manager at Derby, and the injuries and illness.

"But I wish the season was not about to end because I've come into a bit of form and I'm enjoying my football."

Varney was talking to the Evening Telegraph.

The 26-year-old, who ended his loan with Sheffield Wednesday by scoring twice in a win over Southampton on Saturday, returns in goalscoring form and is in the squad for the match with Reading tonight and is expected to play some part in the match.
