Jay McEveley has had a stop start season for Derby this time round, and despite seeing his season ended by a metatarsal injury Nigel Clough insists he'll still be in his plans next season.
"We've been very pleased with his contribution. He has tried to take on board the things we've asked him to do.
"He's got a lovely left foot and plays some great balls into the strikers as well. He heads it - he even filled in at centre-half a little bit, which was a possibility for the end of the season.
"We will miss him in the last four games.
"Looking ahead, we would like to get some competition for him but he'll probably be our first-choice left-back.
"He is only 23, he's still young and has had a couple of moves in that time. He needs to settle down for two or three seasons, stay injury-free and put a consistent run together and make himself a number one left-back, hopefully here.
"Jay is a battler. He doesn't like losing, whether it be in training or matches. He's got a very good attitude. Sometimes that bubbles over a little bit too much but we'd rather have it that way."
The Scottish international has had a terrible time with injuries this season, both here at Derby and during his time on loan with Charlton, but he has come back into the side under Clough and shown what we knew he was capable of.
News that McEveley will most likely be Clough's first choice left back next season will be a boost to the 23-year-old, but also puts faith, and rightly so, in him. If we don't need to replace him there is no point. He just needs to have a bit of luck to be able to stay injury free.
