Squad To Be Cut To Slash Wage Bill

Derby have been looking to cut the wage bill for sometime now, and with a wage budget agreed between Nigel Clough and Adam Pearson cutting the squad is the best way to reduce this.

"We have tried the big-squad route. Wage-wise, it will not be as generous as it was this season.

"We have worked a figure out (wage budget and transfer budget) we are happy with and it is one this club can afford."

Derby chairman Pearson was talking to Sky Sports.

Clough inherited a huge squad, which now stands at 33-men, which is far too many for most clubs let alone a Championship one to sustain, so cutting this and being more frugal with wages from now in is the best way to manage this and help reduce the £23m debt we are in.

To many players in the current squad are not doing enough to earn the money they are paid, but getting them off the wage bill could be the biggest problem, without the need of having to pay them off!

Ellington will surely be one of the players in the firing line but the problem is Watford simply don't want him back - If it has been agreed that Derby take him on a free then you should just try and flog him to League 1.
