Wednesday Sign Varney On Loan

He only joined us permanently in January, after a shot loan spell, but Luke Varney has been loaned out already with Sheffield Wednesday signing him up for an initial month.

"It was an opportunity that I couldn't turn down. He is a good player and I am delighted to have him.

"Moving to Sheffield Wednesday is not just a short-term measure. If things go well for him then there is no reason why we wouldn't look at him for the long-term as well.

"If a player comes in, does really well, fits into your setup and then kicks on, these are the things that strike deals.

"On a month's loan you get to know the player as a person and what they are like on the pitch."

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws was talking to BBC Radio Sheffield.

The 26-year-old joined Derby on loan from Charlton ahead of the last loan window closing before former Rams boss Paul Jewell made his signing a permanent move in January for around 1m. The former Crewe hitman hasn't found the going so easy under new boss Nigel Clough, and this loan move could signal that he isn't part of his long-term thinking?

Derby travel to Hillsborough in April (11th), but Varney will not able to face us.
