Derby were outclassed by promotion chasing Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Nigel Clough however was left fuming at the defending that helped them to their 4-2 win.
"Until we can defend at a reasonable level, then that's going to be the pattern I'm afraid.
"We have to improve to try and make it a little harder for the opposition to score.
"The first three from our point of view were very, very poor goals."
Clough was talking after the match on Saturday.
When you give away goals as easily as we did you are always leaving yourself with a mountain to climb and we did exactly that. Things are looking much better under Clough than they had been under Paul Jewell, but this is another showing that highlights there is still work to be done and backs the thoughts that Clough is likely to be a busy man in the summer. He will have to move players on first though, before he can bring in others that he wants.
A real plus from the match was Barry Bannan, who came on at half time for another debutant John Eustace (another loan signing) to make his Derby debut after signing from Aston Villa on loan a few days previously, who scored within 20 minutes of his introduction.
