Jewell Plotting Ram Raid

Paul Jewell is planning to swoop in for Darren Powell. Jewell is in need of extra cover at the back he sees the experienced defender as an ideal option on a short term basis.

'It's no secret that we need extra cover at the back and Darren fits the bill in terms of his knowledge of the game and is a strong personality.

'He would give us cover in the short-term and we can have a look at him while he can also have a look at us.

'Darren is an old-fashioned defender who heads it and kicks it clear, and there is a lot to be said for that.

'If he comes here and does well he could get himself a contract to the end of the season.'

Jewell was talking to the official website.

The 32-year-old had been on trial with Charlton, and looked likely to sign for the Championship strugglers, but came along for training with us this week and now looks set to be handed a contract until the end of December. This contract could be extended until the end of the season should Jewell be impressed with him.

Former Crystal Palace man Powell is eligible to sign for us as he is a free agent, having left Southampton in the summer after some injury problems.

We needed a defender, he was available so nothing to lose really. If he wants a longer-term deal he needs to impress, so needs to work hard. Win-win situation for us really.
